Rom-coms don’t usually come with a diagnostic manual, but You’re Dating a Narcissist is out here trying anyway. When Marisa Tomei signs on as a psychology professor convinced her daughter’s fiancé is a walking red flag, the movie starts playing a much trickier game than its premise lets on. Speaking with Kyle Meredith, Tomei, Sherry Cola, Ciara Bravo, and Marco Pigossi all circle the same idea from different angles: what if everyone’s a little guilty here? The film leans into that ambiguity, building a story that’s just as interested in mother-daughter tension and friendship dynamics as it is in calling out toxic behavior. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Tomei admits the film’s hook comes from how casually the term gets thrown around now, saying, “Everybody’s a narcissist now… but there are degrees, and there are those that really idealize and devalue and discard people.” What drew her in wasn’t some mission to educate, but the way the story lets audiences argue it out afterward. “If you wind up talking with friends, there’ll probably be a bunch of funny stories and also a really nice little group therapy session,” she says. That ambiguity bleeds into her own character, too, who might be projecting just as much as she’s diagnosing. “She’s so obsessed with it, [she’s] actually enacting it a lot of the time,” Tomei adds, turning the whole movie into a guessing game where instinct might be the only reliable guide.
Cola picks up that thread from the ensemble side, calling the script “so funny and so smart” while pointing out how rare it is to see multiple women given full arcs at once. “These three women are going through something simultaneously, but at different chapters of love,” she says. Meanwhile, Bravo leans into the emotional push-and-pull, noting her character is “being torn in half by the two people she loves most,” while Pigossi plays things right down the middle, explaining, “It depends on where you stand… your experiences dictate how you see things.” He adds that walking that line was the fun of it, especially since “the bad guy… looks such like a nice guy.” By the end, whether you’re laughing, cringing, or rethinking your last relationship, the cast seems pretty confident you’ll have an opinion.
