Today, Consequence launches the first edition of Year Zero, a series of packages celebrating some of the most pivotal years in pop culture. To kick things off, we’re traveling 25 years into the past to rank the 50 Best Albums of 2001. Stay tuned for more lists and musings on ’01, including the 25 Best Movies. Welcome to Year Zero: 2001.
A quarter century — it sounds pretty damn monumental, doesn’t it? And yet, that’s how long it’s been since the year of our lord 2001. That’s 25 five trips around the sun, nearly 10,000 sunrises and sunsets, and 11 Fast & Furious movies. What a world!
Looking back on that particular year — one that would have lasting effects for, ahem, several reasons — it’s interesting to see which albums have stood the test of time, and which ones continue to have impact today. I mean, we are a bunch of music nerds after all, and if we’re still listening to an album 25 years later, that has to say something about the quality of the tunes, right?
And what a batch of 25th anniversaries it is. There are debuts from The Strokes, Gorillaz, and Tenacious D; final efforts from acts like Aaliyah, Fugazi, and Unwound; and standout releases from both indie kids and pop superstars alike, from The Microphones and Wilco to P!nk and Destiny’s Child. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few albums from 2001 we still love all these years later…
Too many, actually. So, we did the only thing that made sense: officially ranked them. Enter Year Zero: 2001, a celebration of the best and most influential media from that remarkably strong 12 months. And we’re not stopping at albums, so stay tuned for more lists and thoughts on the cultural effects of 2001 in the coming days.
For now, though, take a stroll through one of the strongest musical years of the new millennium. Here are our picks for the 50 best albums of 2001.
